Top 5 Pregnant Dog Labor Signs

Welcome to my blog on pregnant dog labor signs. Read on and learn the early signs of dog labor and be prepared when your dog gives birth.

Here are the labor signs that may appear when your dog is about to give birth. Most of the time there is a ten to fifteen minute gap between puppies being born.

1. Temperature Drop. After 2 months of dog pregnancy, you should check your dogs temperature using a dog thermometer and monitor her temperature. The temperature drop should be around 97-98 degrees. From this, for around 24 hours; your dog will now give birth. When your dog does not begin labor within a day of the temperature drop, you should consult your local veterinarian.

2. Your dog refuses to eat. Most bitches will refuse to eat before they go into labor, which obviously isn't normal for dogs. This can be another good early warning sign.

3. Looking for a Hiding Place or a den. Most female dogs have this behavior naturally. They will try to look for a secluded place where they feel is safe and comfortable to deliver their puppies. These places can be under your bed, in the corner of the garage, behind the door etc. During these periods, they can be more aggressive to other people too.

4. Shivering and sickness. Another dog labor sign is when the dog begins to shiver and even vomit. This is completely normal, and the best thing you can do is make sure there is fresh water available at all times.

5. Wanting you near. The dog is likely to stare at you and want you near to her at all times. Like number three, this is a comfort thing.

Finally, trust your instinct! If your dog is acting differently, it is probably trying to tell you something.

Bear in mind that dog pregnancies are quite short, only around 63 days, so make sure you are prepared in dog birth. These are just some of the dog labor signs, and although common, it is not unheard of for labor to start almost unannounced.
